"My graph isn't smooth" or "Network traffic appears in 'bursts' instead of a smooth line"

This can be caused by routers that don’t update their traffic counters as often as PeakHour is set to query them. It results in a kind of “on” / “off” pattern in the graph — bursts of traffic separated by flat gaps, instead of a smooth line.

There are two ways to fix it:

  1. Reduce the frequency at which PeakHour polls. This is controlled in Settings → Display via the Refresh Interval dropdown.

  2. For SNMP monitors, try enabling Ask device to smooth data in the monitor’s Advanced settings (Settings → Monitors, select the monitor, then Advanced). This asks the device to refresh its counters every second instead of its default, producing smoother graphs.

    Support for this is device-dependent.

If neither option helps, we recommend you contact the device manufacturer and ask them to update their SNMP implementation to allow for more frequent counter updates.
